How is a channel sales role different from a direct sales role?

Public Comments

  1. A channel sales person is responsible for a number of channels in his/her sales territory. These channels may be retail outlets, Value-added resellers ( VAR ), System Integrators ( SI ), Original equipment ( OEM ), or authorized distributors. The channels sales person becomes successful by encouraging and developing the channels to perform well; he/she does not actually call on customers on a day-to-day basis ( maybe during special events and on joint calls with the channel person ), but really works in the background to ensure the product line is well represented and not neglected by the channels. If the products are retail products, then they also have to manage inventory, restocking, delivery, etc. As you can see, the Channel Sales person has to be a good relationship manager, a good teacher, and a cheerleader. A direct sales guy, on the other hand, is responsible for each sale in his/her territory; they call directly on customers and close sales themselves. They are measured on the raw sales revenue from their territory.
