How do I get my mom to stop buying into MLM scams?

My mom is quite poor. She stays at home and she and my dad are divorced. For extra cash, she tries to earn money via MLM (multi level marketing or network marketing - similar to 'pyramid' schemes). She has tried out at least half a dozen over the past decade and all they do is suck her in, she exploits her friends, goes on overseas conferences, she's convinced she'll be a multi-millionaire within months and maxes out her credit cards on MLM junk (buying stock she never sells, advertising paraphanalia etc). Despite failure after failure, she convinces herself that it'll make her big bucks. I try to be tactful but she's been so brainwashed she won't have a bar of what I say - MLM is the future of the economy, it is NOT a pyramid scheme but a real investment opportunity, such-and-such made millions out of it, blah blah. What should I do? It's become such an issue that sometimes there's not enough money for food and electricity!

  1. If you have a friend who you can trust, get a MLM, talk it up and have the address to send it be your friend's address. When you get her response back from your friend, show her that she almost gave her money away, like she has been for years. Perhaps then she will listen.
  2. She sounds as if she needs an intervention. ergo: get your family and friends together and brief then on the situation. You need to do some research on the companies in question and also get together bank statements, transactions of herself in particular. Demonstrate the value of keeping the money in a maturing tax-free interest account like an ISA or a TESSA (I'm not particularly up on these but I'm sure you could do some research). Tell her how much money is being wasted and what people think of these MLM 'investments'. Find journalism and documentaries about the behaviour of these companies and the people who organise them - chances are they'll be at the 'top' of the pyramid (or possibly totally unconnected.) Good luck in your digging and all the best to your mom.
  3. Hi Dave, I can appreciate how you feel about your your mom not making money and losing money to the point that her needs are not met. Sounds like you're her rock so keep supporting and helping her as much as you can. Dave I'm going to answer you, however my answer is based on finding a balance between giving your mom solutions to achieve her dreams, because it sounds like she has a strong conviction in her decision and giving you some resources to empower her with the necessary skills to become wealthy. There are pyramid scams out there, however not many because the federal government along with the Direct Selling Association has gotten rid of these scammers. Unfortunately, we are part of the human race so there will always be a few crooks out there. Not sure if your mom joined legal, legitimate MLMs or not. Dave let's see if my advice is beneficial for her.... .....First, have you heard of Mark Victor Hansen, co-author of all the Chicken Soup For The Soul books or Bill Bartman (the 25th richest man on Forbes list) or John Gray the author of Men Are From Mars Women Are form Venus, or Brian Tracy best selling author of over 47 books and he's also an international coach and business developer to major corporations all over the world? All of these men were already multimillionaires in their own right before they recently created a real MLM company along with over 100 other authors, trainers, motivational speakers, and business gurus to empower people with skills and inspiring education to become wealthy through personal growth and business development. Also, Donald Trump and Warren Buffet (the 2nd richest man -a close 2nd to Bill Gates) have both purchased a MLM company to add to their portfolio of businesses because they know the value of the MLM business approach. If my advice sounds bias it's because it is. Since the Real estate market crashed I've been creating wealth from the comfort of my home in MLM and inspiring others to do the same. I only work with people who are willing to get the training and the skills to be profitable, otherwise it's a waste of time to get involved and make no money. Dave it sounds like your mom was recruited into many businesses without a mentor training her on how to actually make money. Since your mom really wants to become wealthy in the MLM industry, she deserves to get the training, skills and inspiring education to become a profitable entrepreneur. I invite you to visit my blog homepage to view a video by Brian Tracy. Your mom could have access to many business development trainings like this in this "legitimate" MLM. Dave you could be the one to guide her to get the skills to really start making money. Visit my blog and show your mom the video, and definitely call me if you would like a free strategy session.
